The Call
A group of creative photography to embody Carven's Spring/Summer 2024 collection, inspired by the western desert's beauty and Louise Trotter's design philosophy alongside Alison Watt's artistic vision, the call is to create a visual narrative harmonizing simplicity, elegance, and a connection with nature.
The Answer
Louise Trotter's deconstructivist design philosophy serves as a guiding principle, based on that, I put my effort into white soft structures, clean lines, asymmetrical cuts, and flowing symmetry that resonates with the core values of Carven, creating a visual narrative that epitomizes the brand's pursuit of simplicity and elegance.
I am also inspired by Alison Watt's work in the rendering of fabrics: “The materials she depicts are heavy or lightweight, crumpled, knotted, or suspended, with sensual folds sometimes reminiscent of anatomical details, such as women’s genitalia inspired by Gustave Courbet’s Origin of the World (1866)“.
The dominant visual elements of large white fabrics serve as multifaceted symbols. They represent the folds of clothing, the empty sheets on a bed, and, most importantly, carriers of the wearer's self-confidence. By positioning models with their backs to the camera, I take a bold approach, allowing them to embody fearlessness in embracing the unknown future, a stark contrast to the timidity often associated with facing the camera.
Using the traditional medium billboards to communicate the carefully chosen name, "Nexus," with audiences, draws inspiration from Alison Watt's concept of “pushing the folds of fabric into the viewer's own space”. It is intentionally ambiguous, inviting each audience to forge a personal connection with it. This deliberate ambiguity encourages a sense of liberation, allowing individuals to freely interpret and relate the concept to their own lives.
Freedom for women, Freedom to dress, Freedom to live.
